How to Celebrate Christmas? - From the life of Mary
Introduction:
As
Christians, we celebrate Christmas as our festival of joy. Our preparation to
celebrate Christmas begins months in advance. In this article, we are going to
look at how Mary celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Slave of the Lord:
Once Mary heard the word from the Angel about the birth of Jesus, She said,
Luke 1:38 "Behold I am the bondslave of the Lord" (NASB 1995).
At present, it is very difficult to understand the essence of the word slave since we don’t have slaves in our time. But in Mary's time, there were slaves. When we become a slave to a master, we lose the right to do our will. If the Master is good, the slave will have a good life. If the Master is cruel, the slave’s life will be very difficult.
Mary knew this and she also knew that the Lord is a very good Master and she said 'I am the slave of the Lord' and she surrendered to God's will.
"The Greatness of the man's power is the measure of his surrender" - William Booth.
In Christian Life "Surrender is not the best way to live, it is the only way to live".
Mary Visits Elizabeth:
After hearing the word of Jesus' birth from the Angel, Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth.
Luke 1:39, 40 " At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,
where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth"(ESV).
In Tamil Bible, it says 'தீவிரமாய்' that means with enthusiasm. Beloved, in this festive season we have to visit our relatives, neighbors, church members with enthusiasm like s Mary and greet them. This is the way to celebrate Christ and Christmas.
'Christmas is meant to be shared’
Mary took Jesus to the temple for purification. At that time while going for purification they had to make a sacrifice in the temple. For this, Mary bought doves (Luke 2:24). At that time, only poor people would bring doves for sacrifice, rich people would sacrifice goats.
Lev 12:8 "But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons..."(ESV).
If we are in Mary's situation, what
will we do? Jesus was a miracle baby and a male baby, angels came and visited
him during his birth. Definitely, we will go for loans and we will buy goats
for sacrifice. Beloved take a look at our life -- how much
money are we spending lavishly during Christmas by taking loans?
She never went for loans to buy goats
She celebrated with contentment.
Beloved let’s celebrate Christmas like Mary.
Surrendering to God's will,
Visiting our family and neighbors,
And being content with what we have.
"Glory to God in the highest, and on peace among those with whome he is pleased" Luke 2:14(ESV).
